ON the 20th of January, 1793, the King, after passing some | time with his Confessor, Edgworth, conceived he had acquired | sufficient fortitude for an interview with his family.

In the afternoon, the Queen, the Dauphin, the Princess Royal, | and the Princess Elizabeth, were conducted to his apartment.

They continued three hours together.

The King, though at times so affected as to lose the power of | utterance, retained his recollection through the whole of this try- | ing scene.

The most violent agitation was visible in the features, and in the | manner of the Queen, while despair rendered her almost frantic; | her eyes wildly expressed indignation and horror.

The Princess Royal, at an age when sensibility is great, but too | weak to support the excess of her grief, fell at the knees of her | father, where she remained in a convulsive fit, for a considerable time.

The infant sorrows of the Dauphin were strongly expressed by | his caresses and his tears.

The piety of the Princess Elizabeth rendered her distress, if not less poignant, at least, more calm.

After the departure of his family, the King remained some | time motionless – his eyes fixed on the ground – Recovering himself, he said, with a deep-fetched sigh, ’What a terrible moment is this!’“

Leur entrevue dura trois heures, dans les situations les plus déchirantes. Le Roi ne put proférer un seul mot[,] tant son âme était oppressée; il restat [sic] absorbé dans le plus sombre recueillement pen- | dant toute cette désolante scène.

La plus violente agitation caractérisait tous les traits, & les gestes | de la Reine; le désespoir la rendait presque furieuse; ses yeux ex- | primaient rapidement le délire, l’indignation, et l’horreur.

Madame Royale, dans cet age, où l’on sent déja bien vivement, mais trop faible pour supporter l’excés de sa douleur; ètait [sic] tombée | sur les genoux de son pere, où elle resta long tems dans un éva- | nouissement convulsif.

Le Dauphin, par les larmes et ses pressantes caresses, donnait, à | la peine qu’il ressentait, la plus vive & la plus touchante expression.

Madame Elizabeth, dont l’affliction concentrée n’en était que plus profonde, employait les forces que la religion lui conservait, à | intéresser le ciel au sort de son malheureux frere.

Aprés le depart de la famille, le Roi resta quelque tems immo- | bile, les yeux fixés vers la terre, puis revenant à lui, il dit, avec | un profond et pénible soupir, ’que ce moment est terrible’.“
